Gustave Dore

Gustave (or Gustave Doré (in French: Gustave Doré) was a French painter, illustrator and engraver. Doré is called the great illustrator of the 19th century because of the unsurpassed play of light and shadow in his graphics. Doré never received an art education, but spent his time in The Louvre and in the National Library, studying paintings and engravings. It is a curious detail that the artist divided his working day into three parts: in the morning he devoted himself to painting, and in the evening to painting again. In 1848 the artist became a participant in the salon, where he exhibited his works. Doré created engravings-illustrations for books by Rabelais, Balzac, Dante, Byron, an illustrated English edition of the Bible, Edgar Allan Poe, Samuel Coleridge, John Milton, Alfred Tennyson, as well as to a few stories.
